Blackout Technologies is a suite of apps that gives employers control over that which employees can access via their mobile devices, including the ability to disable the camera and browser functions and block the launching of apps on iOS and Android to limit the amount of data that could be removed or sent by rogue employees. This can be set up within a geofence, beacon proximity, or network.
As the smart phone is now an integral part of people's lives personal devices cause a huge distraction and potential security risk at school, college, and in the workplace.Creating a solution to avoid these lost hours or drops in productivity will be a huge benefit to employers and employees, tackling this problem potentially could become a huge marketplace.
Blackout’s founders came to my agency after three other companies told them their product couldn’t be built using today’s platforms. But we found a way.
We also needed a 'control room' of sorts, for the employee to keep track of everyone's devices. We ended up building a progressive web app, so we could store data on devices for faster loading times.
The app was multi functional, allowing employers to add or remove devices, reset employee passwords or delete profiles remotely, and most importantly add a geofence, Beacon, or set a time of day to activate when blocking occurs. It also had the functionality to trigger and alert profiled devices in case that necessity surfaced.
To successfully get adoption on the market we to whitelabel. This meant building out a robust design system, adaptable tone of voice, and customisable front end. I put together a design system that would work with a dark/light mode, and could be adapted to the brand of whoever decided to use the technology.
There was also talk of Covid-19 applications for the technology, as we successfully got deviced to ping each other. This would create a 'Risk Chart' for office environments. This was before the 'track and trace' system was put in place by the UK government.
Since its launch, Blackout Technologies has gone from strength to strength, working with global companies and prestigious schools to pilot the product. Last year, the product was recognised by the DADI awards, winning the Best Innovation in Technology category.
